O Inspetor Geral (The Government Inspector)

1 / 5

Synopsis

In the piece “O Inspetor Geral”, under the direction of Paulo José, Grupo Galpão makes use of comedy to talk about the imposture, hypocrisy and fear. The text, written in 1836, is as modern as the best plays in this century, specially for it's critical content and denouncement of the evils that afflict today's world: bribery, impunity, government corruption, the malversation of public money, the insensibility of the powerful ones in the face of famine and people's misery.

In the production's plot, a governor from a distant Imperial Russian province receives a letter from a friend in the capital, alerting him about the possible visit of a Government Inspector, named by the Czar, to make an inquest in the public administration on the furthest corners of the country. This Inspector travels incognito and in a secret mission, which terrorizes the governor and his advisors, corrupt administrators who exploit their governees.

A foreigner comes to satay in the city hotel. He does not say why he has come, and doesn't continue his travel. The assumption that he is the high official from Saint Petersburg becomes: he is the Government Inspector.

In truth, it is a small public official, Ivan Aleksandrovitch Klestakov, traveling towards a neighbor village, who lost all his money playing cards and can't afford the hotel expenses.

The extraordinary comical effect of Gógol's work is in the disproportion. The city residents see the visitor through the deformed lenses of their bad consciousness and the fear of justice, blind to what is really in from of them.
